ECLIPSE EXHIBIT “Shadow Dance” – CHABOT SPACE AND SCIENCE CENTER  opened June 2001

“A Total Solar Eclipse is an extraordinary event that has inspired, frightened, awed, and amazed people and cultures around the world.  The science, mythologies, art and history of eclipse astronomy is contagious and awe-inspiring. It is an event that everyone should see at least once.”    Viper Vertex has created an interactive experiential multimedia exhibit to provide visitors with an exploratory glimpse of these unique planetary phenomena. “Shadow Dance” is an interactive multi-user multimedia floor-sensor driven environment that encourages visitors to create an eclipse by aligning the Sun, Moon and Earth on an arc of 12 high-resolution flat panel displays. This is NOT a kiosk, there is no mouse, no keyboard. By simply stepping on pictures on the floor, an eclipse is created, whereby the visitor interactively explores information about Lunar and Solar eclipses - the science, mythology, art, history, popular culture, video & photographs with multi-cultural sounds and narrations. “Shadow Dance”, completed in June of 2001 is in the permanent collection of Chabot Space and Science Center, Oakland, CA.

INNOVATION FORUM Exhibit  ©1999  at THE TECH Museum of Innovation, San Jose, CA   (Oct. 98 - present)

The “Innovation Forum” is an interactive multimedia exhibit that solicits and includes real-time recording and playback of video/audio comments from its viewers. To encourage interaction, the “Innovation Forum” provides discourse and dialog by varied “experts” talking on a wide range of issues concerning innovation and technology. We invited/interviewed and digitized a diverse group of speakers to provide a wide range of perspectives and dialog concerning primarily technological innovations that have affected our lives, our work and our global culture/society.  Topics for discussion include: cloning, patenting of life forms, genetic engineering, the ethical implications of these and other related issues, computer technologies and ubiquitous computers,  global access to new technologies, new explorations, cyberspace as a community and more. The educational content of this exhibit is diversified, provocative, informative and inspirational to encourage museum visitors’ to comment on issues of innovations in technology. For more information on this exhibit check our web site:  www.vipervertex.com.

IN THE SHADOW  . . .

“What started out as a curious passion has become an all absorbing obsession and life-long quest!. I travel - in less than  ideal conditions! - to often extreme exotic places for moments some as long as 4 minutes and others as little as 45 seconds and the chance to revel in, videotape and be in the shadow - of a total solar eclipse. This has led to fascinating encounters, research and several interactive multimedia works on the ambiance, mythologies, folklore, histories  and experiences surrounding these awesome events. Impulsive, yes. Exciting, definitely! “    ( --   quoted  from Artswire  “A Conversation with JoAnn Gillerman” of August ‘95” )

The multimedia works resulting from these experiences address the similarities, differences, science and poetics associated with each distinct Total Solar Eclipse and the specific region in which it occurred. They emphasize the diversity of mythologies, folklore, stories and experiences accompanying each distinct location.  Many of these eclipses are represented in the Eclipse exhibit ©2001  “Shadow Dance” produced for  Chabot Space and Science Center. Visit “in the shadow…” on “www.vipervertex.com” for more information.
